Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit Imagery

Dancing Shoes

We see Rosie's red shoes many times. At one point, when Jojo and his mother are walking alongside a river, we see her shoes from his height, as she dances along. Here, they represent her free and fanciful spirit. Then later, Jojo is shocked to see them hanging in the town square, marking the fact that she has been executed by the Gestapo.

Adolf

Jojo has an imaginary Adolf Hitler who follows him around. It is a shocking image at first because we are so accustomed to associating Hitler with the horrible political actions he committed; his image is that of ultimate evil. However, in Jojo Rabbit, as portrayed by Taika Waititi the writer/director, he is more of a buffoonish, pot-bellied clown than an evil dictator, the figment of a young boy's imagination.

The Pool

Speaking of imaginary Hitler, he is often put in ridiculous scenarios within the film. One of the most visually striking moments of this is when Jojo goes to the pool with the other Hitler Youth and we see Hitler swimming underwater in the pool with a swimming cap and a pistol in his hand.

Running through the forest

After being humiliated by the other kids at the Nazi camp, "Jojo Rabbit" decides to return to prove that rabbits can be braver than they seem. We see him running through the forest in his Nazi camp uniform, followed by Hitler, in a jubilant sequence. It is an uncanny and whimsical image in the film, one which encapsulates its irreverent and ridiculous tone.
