    Based on the first two chapters, what do you think about the narrator? Is it a single person?

    The identity of the primary narrator is never revealed throughout the novel, though it occasionally shifts into another clear first-person perspective. In the beginning of the first chapter, the narrator's tone is more that of gossip while later in the chapter the tone becomes more sympathetic. Some students may argue it is the same narrator, simply telling the story in a different tone. Maybe the narrator took a break and came back in a better mood. However, there are a few points that students could make to argue that it is two separate people narrating the first chapter....
