Hospital Sketches Character List

Tribulation Periwinkle

Tribulation is the central character of the book, and the fictionalized representation of Alcott herself. She is depicted as an energetic young woman whose overflowing enthusiasm is translated through her iconic opening “I want something to do”. The object of Tribulation’s quest is a meaningful task which has the ability of breaking, even if just a little, through the fetters oppressing the women of her time. Her determination to join the armed forces, as a volunteer nurse, throws the light upon Alcott’s own feministic views, and her quest of equality, not as a convenience to women, but as an acknowledgement of their capabilities.

Tribulation is thus portrayed as a determined young woman, who rejects gender roles and the positions which society expects her to hold just because she is a woman. She refuses marriage, opposes acting, and refuses to go back to the monotony of a school mistress’ life. Her greatest desire is to be able to stand side by side with the male soldiers and fight with them. The societal norms of the era, however, made the closest position to her wish take the form of a nursing career. Accordingly, she joins the armed forces as a volunteer nurse to do her utmost in helping the soldiers.

The four sketches paint Tribulation in the colors of a determined young woman who does not let obstacles stand in her way. Neither the unprejudiced society in which she lived, nor the hardships of hospitals can hinder her from achieving her goal and living up to her potential by giving her utmost for the support of her country. As a woman, Tribulation is portrayed as strong, resolute, loving, friendly, and caring. The soldiers in her charge soon perceive these qualities, and bow their proud heads in respect to this worthy young woman.

John

John is a young wounded soldier who was formerly a blacksmith from Virginia. He is depicted as a handsome young man with a commanding stature and an unfaltering courage. His serenity and apparent confidence make Tribulation hesitate before approaching him. Later on, however, she realizes that behind the noble face and manly demeanor of John, a sensitive nature lurks hiding in the background of his personality. Unfortunately, John’s wounds are fatal, and he is left with very little time to live. During his last days, the sympathy and friendship of Tribulation form the only light breaking through the darkness of his approaching doom. But even in death, John stands a brave man to the very end.

Teddy

Teddy is the name of a young soldier who was saved in battle, and brought to the hospital by dint of the heroic exertion of a friend named Kit. Being incapacitated by injury, Teddy would have died where he lay had Kit left him there. But the latter was dangerously wounded himself, and the exertion had consequently cost him his life. Teddy is thus portrayed as a sensitive young man, and a loving friend who regrets bitterly the death of his savior.

Kit

Kit is Teddy’s friend and savior. He is a heroic soldier who generously gives his life in order to save that of a brother in the battlefield.

Ned

Ned is a young wounded soldier and the closest friend to John. He seems to admire the latter to no end, for he could not cease praising his bravery to Tribulation prior to his arrival. Ned is greatly saddened when his friend pass away, and the strength of their friendship is proven during the last moments they spend together.
