What experience has Roy had that helps him decide what to do when he is surrounded by snakes?

While hiking on a field trip, Roy came face to face with a grizzly bear and its two cubs. He remembered that he should remain perfectly still, and it worked..... the mothers and her cubs ran back into the woods. Roy uses the same tactics when faced with the cottonmouth snakes.
