    What is the common misconception about the extent of the damage before they get outside? What does this tell us?

    Most of the characters believe that it was their building that was bombed, or that the damage is local to their area. They have no conception of how many people are dead or injured, which is especially shocking for Dr. Sasaki, who doesn't leave the hospital in this chapter. The main effect of this is emphasizing that the A-bomb was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. They had no reference for the kind of destruction they saw and no idea what could have caused it, resulting in various theories about what had happened.
