Hiroshima Mon Amour Imagery

Hiroshima Mon Amour Imagery

Haunted

We see Elle standing in the front of the frame as Lui comes and stands behind. They speak of never seeing one another again. The imagery creates the feeling of being haunted as Lui is the ghost who will forever be near Elle as she tries to escape his memory.

Peace Park

We see Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima as Elle narrates over the images. We see skin in a suspended solution, cracked stones, and balls of hair. The imagery brings to life the horror of the bombing of Hiroshima and the reality of a war that occurred just over a decade earlier. We feel that the horror still lives on even in the stillness of what was left behind.

Flashback

Elle has a flashback to watching the death of the soldier. The twitch of Lui's hand sends her instantly back to the twitch of the soldier who is dying in her arms. The imagery shows us how alive in us these memories of war are and that to escape them is more difficult than one could imagine.

Opening

We see the two lovers in the opening scene entangled in one another's arms. They are covered in sweat, glitter and what seems to look like ash. The imagery reveals an evolution in their relationship. It shows the lovers as though they were effected by a nuclear bombing, much as Hiroshima was. It foreshadows that they will suffer the same fate.
