    Regardless of whatever is going on in his life, Pip wants to somehow be able to continue to make sure that Herbert is helped financially in the way that Pip has been anonymously helping him. Why is this so important to Pip?

    Answers may vary. Students may note that Herbert is a good, honest, and loyal friend to Pip. They may also think that Pip feels some guilt about dragging Herbert into debt with him. Also, students may think that Pip wants to pass along a little bit of the financial help that he has received, and wants to feel that he is doing some bit of good in the world.
