Students will understand some of the literary allusions and historical references made throughout the text.

As a class, brainstorm a list of allusions and references from the text so far (this may include William Wordsworth, The Picture of Dorian Grey, the Reconstruction period, the Tuskeegee Institute, the NAACP, and many more). Ask students what they know, if anything, about each reference that comes up.
