    Identity Charting

    Classwide Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will explore identity and group membership as they relate to the novel and to their own lives.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1 ; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.4

    Structure:

    Begin by asking students what they know about Jean Louise and Henry's relationship -- both how the two characters relate to one another, and how other characters perceive them and their romance. Alexandra, for instance, disapproves because Henry is not from a good enough family. What do students think about that kind of judgment? Have they experienced it in their own lives, or encountered it in other literature...
