The mother

In the poem entitled ‘’To My Mother’’, the narrator describes in very fond terms the woman who gave birth to him and who raised him. The narrator’s mother is described as a harsh woman at times, someone who likes to drink but also a woman who is not afraid of anything and anyone. She is compared with a mountain to show her strength but at the same time the narrator makes sure to point out how she is someone who has compassion as well and who hates to see people and animals suffer.

The hyena

The hyena appears in the poem entitled ‘’Summer Song’’ and while it does not appear physically, the narrator mentions how he heard the hyena in the distance and how he was affected by the sound of it.

The son of the narrator

The son is mentioned in the poem ‘’Summer Song’’ when the narrator remembers a time in the past when he and his son were sitting in a garden.

The couple in the poem ‘’To Any Member of My Generation’’

The couple appears in the first stanza of the poem and they are described as sitting on the edge of a river, kissing and unaware of the Past watching the couple from a distance.

The Past

The Past is personified in the poem entitled ‘’To Any Member of My Generation’’ and is portrayed as a hateful man who hides in the bushes and watches young people kissing in the distance. The Past is described as being vindictive and even dangerous to an extent.

The narrator

The narrator in the poem ‘’True Confession’’ is a young man who talks about his experiences with women and how he finally found the truth. Through this poem, the narrator wants to pass on his wisdom to other people who may need it.

Bitches

The term is used in the poem ‘’True Confession’’ to describe the easy women the narrator slept with in his life.

Fellow sailors

The term appears in the poem ‘’True Confession’’ and is used to make reference to other men who, like the narrator, try to find a woman who may be suitable for them.

The woman in the poem ‘’ Turn On Your Side And Bear The Day To Me’’

The woman in this poem is described as someone dangerous, her image being linked with various images of snakes and also with the idea of sin. This image has the purpose of transmitting the idea that the woman has a great influence over the narrator.

The mother of the mysterious woman is mentioned briefly, to transmit the idea that most likely, no one truly knows what the woman who is in the same bed as the narrator knows her private life.

The man in the poem ‘’ On A Friend's Escape From Drowning Off The Norfolk Coast’’

The man in the poem is called a fried by the narrator and in the poem, he is at the beach with his family. While there, he almost drowned but was saved by his partner and the mother of his child.

The woman in this poem is described as a brave woman who saves her partner who almost drowns in the sea. The woman dives into the water and she almost dies in the process as well.
