    What is the significance of Marcel Proust in this chapter?

    Proust as defined through Alison's eyes becomes something of a mirror image for Bruce—someone who desired deeply, couldn't see things as they were but had to give them a more poetic bent, someone who couldn't act on his own desires. Proust becomes someone who reflects at the expense of living the life he wanted, and Alison sees similar tendencies in Bruce, who was knowledgeable and thoughtful but remained removed from an honest life.
