Far from Heaven Summary

Far from Heaven is set in Connecticut in 1957 where Cathy Whitaker is married to Frank Whitaker. Frank is arrested for frequenting gay bars. When Cathy visits Frank at his office, he catches him kissing a man in his office. Frank admits to being gay and is forced to seek help from a specialist who helps individuals like himself get on the right track. The treatment is unsuccessful and Frank becomes an alcoholic because of it.

Their marriage is deeply affected as Frank can no longer perform his duties as a man. He resorts to domestic violence against Cathy. Cathy seeks refuge in the company of Raymond. Raymond is a black man. Raymond and Cathy get caught in a swirling gossip that further deteriorates their friendships and family life. Frank and Cathy decide to go on a vacation to rekindle their marriage but it fails.

Frank asks Cathy for a divorce. Cathy, finally free from her gay husband, decides to follow her heart. She goes to find Raymond so that they can be together. He finds Raymond getting ready to leave town. She begs him not to leave, but his mind is made up, especially after his daughter was assaulted for being African-American. They say their final goodbyes, and they go their separate ways.
