Far from Heaven

Far from Heaven Analysis

Far from Heaven is a movie by an award-winning American filmmaker Todd Haynes which brings the focus on the issues of the mid 20th century society, exploring the themes of racism, homosexuality and roles of women.

Cathy Whitaker is a wife and a mother of a picture-perfect family. Her husband is a successful businessman, and she enjoys the praise of being a successful support to him. While she is arranging dinners and giving interviews for magazines her husband Frank is in a turmoil because he's unhappy with his life.

In Cathy's life suddenly appears a charming African American man, whom she knows to be the son of her previous gardener. Cathy's friendly behavior towards a black man is frowned upon by the conservative society she's a part of.

Cathy decides to go to her husband's work one night because he's late as usual to bring him dinner there. She catches him cheating on her with another man. They talk it out at home and Frank agrees to go to a mental institution for therapy to cure himself of his homosexuality.

Cathy is overwhelmed by her situation, and she finds comfort in Raymond who takes her out on a friendly date. They are seen by one of Cathy's acquaintances and soon they become the main talk of the town. Cathy doesn't want to endanger her family and decides to cut ties with Raymond.

Frank and Cathy go on a vacation where Frank secretly cheats on her with another man. Raymond's daughter is attacked by little white boys at school because of the talk of him and Cathy. Frank confesses to Cathy that he's in love with a man and that he can no longer hide his truth. They agree on a divorce.

Cathy discovers that Raymond's daughter was attacked and rushes to his home. She tells him she's sorry, and he says that he will move to another city. She asks him if she can join him one day, as she's to become single again, and he refuses wanting no longer his daughter in danger.

The movie ends with Cathy rushing to the train station to see Raymond again, but he's already aboard the train. They part with small waves and Cathy goes back home.
