What is the purpose of Hamm's story? Why do you think Beckett chose to include it in the play?
This is an open question. On a surface level, Hamm's story is may seem to some students as a matter of simple diversion for him. However, students may see noteworthy elements within it: for example, its Christmas Eve setting (another allusion), its possibly auto-biographical nature, or the psychological insight it provides about Hamm.
