Day 3

Endgame Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Why does Clov call his and Hamm's lives a "farce"? What do you think it means for a human life to be a "farce"?

This question asks students to dig deeper into what they think Beckett is trying to show and express in his plays on absurdity in human life. The dictionary definition of "farce" shows that "farce" can refer, on the one hand, to a joke or a satirical play. On the other hand, however, "farce" can refer to something empty or meaningless. This duality neatly encompasses the experiences of Hamm and Clov.

  2. 2

What do you make of Hamm's answer to Clov about their farcical lives ("routine")? Do you think routine suffices to keep people living a meaningless life?
