edward 2 as a tragic hero

Tragically oblivious, profoundly romantic, self-destructively homosexual and more than a bit flighty, the portrait of England’s monarch Edward II presented here by Christopher Marlowe is certainly interesting. He becomes a victim of his self-indulgence which by itself might not have led to tragedy, but when combined with an extraordinary gift for ineptitude in the job, it quickly becomes apparent that his comeuppance and downfall are as inexorable as they are predictable. Edward simply has too many schemers around him to survive.
