Divergent (2014 Film) Imagery

Blood Oath

At the Choosing Ceremony we watch as Tris and Caleb and all the other youths cut themselves with a blade in order to draw blood and choose their faction. This imagery shows us clearly that this society is devoted to loyalty on an extreme level. And this instantly creates tension for the audience as this type of ritual is often associated with something dangerous and absolutely not normal.

Roof Jump

Tris has to jump off of a moving train onto a roof in order to continue to remain part of the Dauntless faction. The imagery was built up as Tris performed increasingly more difficult tasks to remain: climb up the subway beams, jump onto the moving subway car and now jump. We feel the tension of her reality and having to do things she unaccustomed to doing in order to remain part of her new faction.

Factions

Four shows his tattoo to Tris and when she sees it it reveals that he has all of the faction symbols on it rather than just the Dauntless faction. He tells her he wants to be more than just one thing and then kisses her. The imagery suggests that they are both of the same mind and heart, and that's what unites them together for the journey ahead.

Fear Simulation

Tris is taken through her fear simulation with her new faction. She's injected with a serum that puts her in touch with her greatest fears. As she awakens to this fear simulation she's attacked by birds. But she tells herself that it isn't real and is able to wake up. She finishes and goes on her way only to realize she's in another trap, and still in her hallucination. The imagery reveals that she's in a dream within a dream, and when she breaks the glass to break free of drowning it reveals she is much stronger than she may even know, and certainly more than Four expected.
