Aberration

An Aberration is a lower-status, non-dangerous citizen of the Society. The label is the result of an Infraction committed either by that person or by a parent (e.g., Ky Markham is an Aberration because of an Infraction his late father committed). In the Society, Aberrations receive undesirable vocation assignments and are ineligible for the Matching pool.

Agate

A type of rock commonly associated with volcanic rock, bright in color and finely grained.

Anomaly

Criminals of the Society; Anomalies are removed from society, supposedly for their own good and the good of other citizens.

Boll

Rounded seed capsules found in plants like cotton and flax.

Chert

A dark, hard, opaque rock composed of silica and with a very fine-grained texture.

Cunning

Demonstrating great skill in accomplishing one's goals.

Elation

Joy; happiness; excitement.

Evenfall

Dusk; the coming of evening.

Harried

Stressed and strained, often as a result of persistent demands or orders.

Immovability

The state of being unable to move.

Overlay

The covering of a surface; a coating.

Plainclothes

The standard uniform outfits that all Society members wear for day-to-day activities. In Crossed, these appear primarily as the black outfits the Rising provides to its members.

Propaganda

Chiefly biased or misleading misinformation used to promote a particular cause or point of view, especially a political one.

Sagebrush

An aromatic plant of the daisy family found in North America.

Spew

To expel rapidly and/or forcibly.

Sterile

Free from bacteria; clean.

Streamline

To design with a form that creates little resistance; to make more efficient.

Swath

A broad strip or area of something.

Threadbare

Falling apart; tattered with age.

Untoward

Unexpected and inappropriate.
