Initially, Crash finds Penn to be different, and as a result of his differences, Crash marks the boy for bullying. In a way, we might even say that Crash is a bit jealous. Over the course of the novel, however, Penn's compassion for Crash's grandfather causes Crash to see him in a different light, and the two become friends.
