Introduction to Cracking India

Cracking India depicts the harrowing tale of the partition from the perspective of a young girl. In 1947, the British gave the subcontinent its independence and divided the country in two. Pakistan for the Muslim-majority areas and India for the Hindu-majority areas. The novel is set in the Punjab, a border area where millions of Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus all lived together. The newly drawn border cut Punjab and the Sikh regions in half, resulting in horrific violence and lost lives. When the novel opens in 1943, Lenny is just four years old. She describes her city, Lahore, as rich and full of life - Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and people from all walks of life mixing together and living...
