The book has been recorded a number of times:
- Roald Dahl himself narrated an abridged version of the book in 1975 for Caedmon Records (CDL 51476).[73]
- In 2002, Monty Python member Eric Idle narrated the audiobook version of the American Edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Harper Childrens Audio (ISBN 978-0060852801).[74][75]
- In 2004, James Bolam narrated an abridged recording of the story for Puffin Audiobooks (ISBN 0-14-086818-6).[76]
- Douglas Hodge, who played Willy Wonka in the London production of the stage musical,[77] narrated the UK Edition of the audiobook for Penguin Audio in 2013 (ISBN 978-0141370293), and the title was later released on Audible.[78]
