Boogie Nights Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Dirk Diggler

Eddie changes his name to Dirk Diggler. This is a symbol that he is creating a new identity for himself, but also a false protective maneuver as he believes in the hype of being Dirk the "star."

Dirk

Dirk calls himself a star while talking to himself in a mirror, just before unzipping his pants and pulling out his penis. This is a symbol that Dirk believes he is someone, a star because of his penis. It reveals how lost he is in his identity.

Cocaine

In the 1980s, Dirk and Reed begin to use cocaine heavily. This is a symbol that they are covering up the pain that lies deep within them, as their careers are fading. They will take drugs in order to find a way to feel good about who they are.

Rollergirl

Rollergirl got her name because she wears roller skates in all of her movies. It is a symbol, though, that she is still in essence a teenager who hasn't grown out of this age within herself, though she is much older.

Little Bill

Little Bill kills his wife, her lover, and himself. This is a symbol that he can no longer take the pain inflicted by his wife's continuous sex with other men, and that he cannot live with himself for taking her life.
