What are some of the ways in which the war impacts the characters’ lives?
The war impacts the character’s lives in several ways. Antonio’s brothers are away from home because of the war. This impacts each family member in a different way, but in general, they all feel stress, strain, and worry. Furthermore, it is understood that Lupito’s mental health crisis comes as a result of his time in the war. In some ways, the war never left Lupito and ultimately contributes to his demise. You might talk to students about what they know about how war can effect soldiers when they return home.
