Blacktop Wasteland

Blacktop Wasteland Analysis

The story is based on Beauregard Montage, who quits criminal activities to concentrate on positive trade deals. However, his plan to abandon crime is upended when he starts struggling to make ends meet. Montage weighs several options but none seems lucrative like committing heists. Kia, Montage’s wife, urges him to sell the car to compensate for debts. The idea is good but Montage is reluctant because the car reminisces him of his dead father, Anthony. Before deciding on the next course of action, he is requested by Ronnie to join them in a daring heist.

Montage has no option but to join Ronnie and his gang in carrying out a heist in a jewelry store. The gang members are familiar with Montage because he used to chauffeur them in the scenes of crime before he exited criminal life. The daring heist is taking place in the shop of Lazy. Lazy is also a perilous criminal. As a result, he knows the people who can rob his shop. Therefore, when his store is robbed, he detains the suspects and forces them to help him get Shade. Shade is also a criminal mastermind.

The entire novel covers the happenings of criminal activities. However, the author wittingly explores the internal conflict of feeling experienced by many die-hard criminals when trying to quit offensive activities absolutely. Montage is struggling with the internal conflict of feeling on whether to get back to a past life. Eventually, he once again participates in heists contrary to what he had promised his friends and family members.
