Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet Book 1 Summary

Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet Book 1 Summary

T’challa is the present-day King of the fictional nation of Wakanda. Like many kings before him, T’challa has been adorned with the ceremonial title of Black Panther which comes with great supernatural power. A Black Panther is sworn to protect his nation no matter the cost; however, T’challa has failed at his duties. He has recently spent time away fighting alongside The Avengers.

In his absence, a series of attacks have crippled the kingdom of Wakanda. Shuri, T’challa’s younger sister, was murdered in one of these attacks-she had taken the role of Black Panther in her brother’s absence. T’challa immediately makes his way back home and meets a grieving and angry nation. Upon his arrival, he makes his way to the vibranium mining site (a highly sought after metal and the source of the nation’s power). The miners are under the control of Zenzi, a woman who possesses supernatural abilities, they attack T’challa who is caught off-guard. T’challa manages to subdue the miners and returns to the Golden City (the capital of Wakanda), to consult with his step-mother, Ramoda, and his advisors.

T’challa is informed that Zenzi is merely a pone in a grand scheme aimed at overthrowing the Wakandan government. Zenzi is working for a man named Tetu who is gathering an army that will help him destroy the current monarchy and recreate a nation run by people. Tetu is also getting financial and military support from an American arms dealer named Zeke Stane. With the help of his soldiers, T’challa tracks down Zenzi and the two engage in a confrontation. Zenzi manages to escape using her mind control abilities.

The story flows with continuous confrontations between T’challa and his new enemies and ends with a short narrative involving Shuri. After her death, her body was preserved in a suspended state at the Necropolis, a burial site for former kings. Her spirit, however, resides on the Djalia: a spiritual realm that holds all Wakandan memory. She meets a former King’s spirit who explains that the Djalia is the most powerful place in Wakanda as it holds the greatest weapon: the memories of Wakanda.
