Beyond the Curve Imagery

Beyond the Curve Imagery

Description of the reaction to seeing the dead man on the ground

The narrator described the reaction that A had after seeing the dead man on the floor as, “ Then the capillaries around his lips rapidly contracted, his pupils dilated, his vision blurred, and his sense of smell sharpened, detecting a whiff of something like rawhide.” In the description of the reaction, the narrator has used imagery because he uses a simile whereby he likens a smell in the room to the smell of rawhide. In addition to the use of a simile, the narrator has vividly described some of the facial reactions for example, ‘his pupils dilated, his vision blurred, and his sense of smell sharpened’ and this creates a mental image of the scenario on the minds of the readers.

Description of locking of the door of the apartment

After A realized that his guest was dead, he rushed to lock the door so that he could not be seen by anyone. The description of how the door was locked is, “It was the standard brass model, rubber padded to fasten quietly and snugly. The deadbolt slid home with a satisfying solidness.” In the description, the narrator achieves imagery by describing the lock by telling the reader that it was made of brass, and that it was a standard lock. The narrator has built a mental image of the action of closing the door in the minds of the reader.

Description of the corpse

The corpse is described as, “The dead man was dressed in dark blue trousers, wrinkled at the back of the knees, creases gone. The shoes were light brown and had rubber soles, down at the heel, with large grains of sand embedded in them.” In this description, the narrator has built imagery because of the use of adjectives such as blue, light brown and large to describe various items that he was wearing.

A’s Apartment

A looked around his apartment and realized that nothing was amiss despite there being a dead man lying on his floor. His apartment is described as, “Entryway with sink, faucet dripping. Six-mat room beyond, tatami flooring covered with a thin woven mat. Plywood ceiling with cruciform beams. Table, chairs, small bookcase. Bay window that took up half the wall, bathed in the warm orange glow of the setting sun.” In this description, the narrator has built imagery by using adjectives such as orange to describe the color of the setting sun.
