Bamboozled Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Blackface

Delacroix is seen wearing blackface at the end of the film as he lay dying from being shot in the stomach. The makeup is a symbol of how he has willingly chosen to participate in the destruction of the black people, killing the efforts of those who came before him to stop the blatantly incorrect portrayal of black people in television shows.

Satire

Delacroix has pitched his Mantan show in order to get fired, but he agrees to carry on with it when it is given the go ahead by Dunwitty. Delacroix now calls the show a satire. This is a symbol of his betraying his morality and integrity for money.

Fame

Manray becomes famous almost overnight from being the star of the Mantan show. It is a symbol that his desire to be loved, to be someone is so great that he's willing to trade his beliefs for it, rather than fight for what is right.

Dunwitty

Dunwitty is Delacroix's boss at CNS. He is a symbol of how white men in America have come to rationalize racist behavior towards black people. He represents the people who live in a bubble and find any means to justify their blatant racism.

Montage

Spike Lee creates a montage at the end of the film of cartoons, blackface performances, and clips of black people being portrayed in a way that is not truthful but yet a created version by white writers. The footage is a symbol of the choice we have: to go back in time to allow the lie to be perpetrated once more, or to put an end to it and grow in unity as a people undivided by race.
