Askari: A Story of Collaboration and Betrayal in the Anti-Apartheid Struggle Quotes

Quotes

"Man lived in complete harmony with nature. The lands provided everything it was needed to live a happy life and for the longest of time, that was the natural way of life."

The narrator

At the beginning of the story, the narrator describes the way in which South Africa looked before the arrival of the European colonizers. This quote portrays the country as a natural paradise, untouched by anything corrupt. This changed however as soon as the British arrived in the country and from a green oasis the country turned into a wasteland.

“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.”

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was one of the leaders of the apartheid movement and he inspired many young men and women to fight for their freedom. He saw the idea of freedom and equality as a basic human right and something that everyone should fight for. However, as the quote above states, if the government decides to deny its citizens those rights, the only remaining option is to break the law and become willing to sacrifice everything, be it one's freedom or even one's life.

"If there was to be equal manhood suffrage the whites would be swamped all over South Africa by the blacks and the whole position for which whites have striven for 200 years or more would be given up."

Jan Christiaan Smuts

Smuts was an important political figure who served as the head of the South African government for many years. Just like his predecessors, his purpose was to make sure that the African people did not gain independence and remain enslaved by the British monarchy. However, as he ended up admitting, this did not make the African people inferior. Instead, it only proved that the British were extremely cunning and cared for nothing else than financial gain and power.
