Public Health Interests

There is a breadth of intellectual opportunities here at Rice. Further explain your intended major and other areas of academic focus you may explore. (150 word limit)

Since moving to Nashville five years ago, I’ve seen how meteoric growth can displace disadvantaged communities from necessary resources. Last summer, I shadowed at a public health lab, exploring the effectiveness of grassroots programs at improving social outcomes in these displaced communities. It was fascinating to see firsthand the application of economics, policy, and medicine to multi-faceted issues.

However, problems associated with urban growth are complex, and that’s why I’m excited to pursue Rice’s Social Analysis major. It’s an incredibly broad course of study teaching students to comprehensively understand society, concurrently learning how to analyze and develop policy solutions to critical urban issues. I’d pursue a minor in Global Health Technologies, where I could apply what I’ve learned to real global health efforts, acquiring valuable practical experience in a complex field. Overall, Rice’s holistic education prepares me to enter the workforce with tools to create solutions to global societal issues.
