Larry Kramer's play The Normal Heart was one of the first pieces of theater made about the AIDS crisis that sought to help demonstrate to a wider public the experience of AIDS patients and educate gay men on the threat of the disease.

Tony Kushner was formatively influenced by the work of Bertolt Brecht and the tradition of experimental, epic German theater, especially its abstract production values and overt social message. Kushner's first play, A Bright Room Called Day was modeled on Brecht's work.
