Rashad is a dedicated, disciplined, successful high schooler who tried to buy chips from a corner store. Instead, he was misunderstood by a police officer who dragged him outside and started beating the boy, claiming he was "resisting." Rashad's hospitalization lasts for most of the novel.

Quinn is Rashad's foil, the high school basketball player whose attempt to buy beer illegally put him as a witness to Rashad's beating. Quinn stands up for the kid, even at the risk of personal sacrifice, betraying his family friend, Paul Gullazzo.
