    One of the more frightening parts of the novel involves young Peyton's blindness from looking at an atomic blast. Chapter 6 describes Doctor Dan Gunn checking on Peyton. Which images in this passage stand out to you? How do the descriptions in this passage advance the novel's theme?

    The blinding of Peyton personalizes the destruction in a way that the mass destruction described earlier does not. The descriptions of Gunn and Peyton sitting in darkness illustrate the horror experienced by the survivors. Students may also note the disturbing nature of a little girl suffering, and this question gives them a chance to work through those feelings.
