Spider

"The government is a spider, spinning its web": This metaphor is used to describe the government's control over its citizens. The metaphor of the spider spinning its web suggests that the government is constantly monitoring and manipulating its citizens, just as a spider monitors and manipulates its prey. This metaphor is used by Demidov when he reflects on the government's surveillance of its citizens.

Heart

"His heart was pounding like a jackhammer. "This simile is used to describe the physical reaction of a character in a moment of intense stress or fear. This simile emphasizes the character's physical state, and how it reflects their emotional state. This simile is used by Demidov when he is about to be arrested.
