    What is significant about Beneatha's story describing when she knew she wanted to be a doctor? Why has she now stopped caring?

    Beneatha realizes she wants to be a doctor when, as a child, she sees a playmate split his face open in a sledding accident, only to have it sewn up by a doctor as good as new. Beneatha saw being a doctor as a way to heal the world, to solve problems and fix things. But Walter's losing the money has made Beneatha feel helpless and out of control, which makes her feel like healing people will not have a significant enough impact to change the world.
