A Problem From Hell Metaphors and Similes

Protective umbrella

Power describes NATO using a metaphor, saying that it is an "imperfect but protective umbrella."

Turning away

Power uses a metaphor to describe how countries in the world "turned away" from the genocides of Rwanda and Armenia. She depicts countries as literally turning away in order to depict their lack of support.

Flee or flight

Power uses a simile to describe how Lemkin "only had survival on his mind," saying he was "like all Jews scrambling to flee or to flight."

Holding power

At the beginning of the book, Power quotes Abraham Lincoln, who said: "We- even we here- hold the power, and bear the responsibility." Here, the idea of holding power is a metaphor, used to describe the agency involved in deciding how to use power.

The book of death

Lemkin writes that the Nazis were "writing the book of death with the blood of my brethren," which is a metaphor for the genocide the Nazis committed.
