George Eastman
George Eastman is the protagonist of the film and is the nephew of the affluent factory-owner Charles Eastman. He is invited into town by his uncle and begins to work for him. After becoming entangled with a factory worker called Alice, George finds himself in a predicament and is accused of killing her after she dies in a boating accident.
Alice Tripp
Alice Tripp is George's girlfriend at the factory. She is impressed by the fact he is the nephew of Charles Eastman, who owns the factory. Later, Alice drowns in a boating accident, and George is accused of her murder.
Angela Vickers
Played by Elizabeth Taylor, Angela Vickers is a beautiful, charming woman who George falls in love with. He first meets her at a party and lies to Alice in order to see her.
Charles Eastman
Charles Eastman is George's wealthy uncle. Although there is some suggestion that George does not get along with his family, Charles gives him an entry-level position at his factory.
