A Hunger Artist Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will be able to analyze the use of a central metaphor in fiction and generate their own for a fictional narrative.

    Students will interpret the text through another artistic medium.

  3. 3

    Students will compare and contrast Kafka's imagery in "A Hunger Artist" with contemporary manifestations and portrayals of deliberate starvation, from hunger strikes to the "pro-ana" community.

    Students will research "slum tourism" and other manifestations of engaging with poverty and suffering in exchange for money.
