A Cyborg Manifesto Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Hybrids (symbol)

Hybrids are a symbol of superiority. Who are humans? We are definitely smarter than other inhabitants of the Earth but not stronger. We are mortal, imperfect, and whatnot: the total list of our flaws is really long. Cyborgs are not like us. They are “wary of holism, but needy for connection.” Unlike us, they seem to have “a natural feel for united-front politics, but without the vanguard party.” No wonder the author believes that cyborgs - “hybrids” - are our future. The main difference between us is that we are divided and they are united.

A cyborg (allegory)

A cyborg is allegory of destroyed boundaries between humans, animals, and machines. It is allegory of absolute perversion. So, what is a cyborg? First of all, it is “a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism.” Secondly, it is evidence of our progress and never-ending work on ourselves. Our ancestors couldn’t even dare to dream about a day when it would be possible to combine a person with animals or technologies. Such boldness would be considered degradation a century ago! Thus, cyborgs are supposed to be our future.

Getting to know each other better (motif)

It seems that cyborgs are the future of mankind, but what do we know about them? Come to think of it, our knowledge about them is rather scarce. The author dwells on “the science fiction of cyborgs,” trying to conduct “the following political-fictional (political-scientific) analysis.” This essay shows how “thoroughly breached” the boundary between “human and animal” is. We are getting to know each other, cyborgs, and animals better. The essayist doesn’t miss a chance to remind us of the fact that cyborgs are already among us.
