Sophie's political views were far different than the majority of her classmates. When she joined the girls' arm of the Hitlerjugend (BDM), she was excited by the prospect of learning new things and making friends. Over time, however, she came to resent the rigidness and confomity the BDM expected. She also hated living away from her family during "Duty Year".

Over time, Sophie began accumulating ideas about politics and humanity that were oppositional to the Nazis. She argued with her teachers and disobeyed her superiors. Sophie's greatest wish was to escape the BDM and join her brother at the University of Munich, which she did after graduating from high school. While in Munich, Sophie, Hans, and other friends met secretly to criticize Hitler and the Nazi Party, She later joined the White Rose, a campus resistance movement, and helped to spread the truth about Nazism.
