In Chapter 25, Jim helps Israel Hands by bringing him a bit of food, drink, and something with which to bind his wound. They then make an agreement that he will care for Hands if Hands teaches him how to sail the ship.

In Chapter 26, Hands has a plan to capture Jim and bind him once the ship is beached. Hands has a coil of rope and a knife. After the ship is landed, Jim escapes Hands by climbing the mast. Hands narrowly misses Jim with his knife, and Jim's pistols accidently fire, Hands is hit by the pistol fire, and he falls into the water.
