The old woman's unseemliness can be found in the way she flouts tradition and takes her independence. She lives independently, goes out alone unchaperoned, attends the races and visits inns.... all by herself. She also befriends people outside of her social sphere.... people of the working class. In addition, the old lady breaks with customary traditions when she ceases to visit her husband's grave. Note, she does not do these things to shock or cause anyone dismay, she simply wants to live life her own way.
