    What do we learn about the law as practiced in England? How does this compare with Equiano’s experiences in America and the West Indies?

    We learn through Equiano’s experience, and his interactions with others, that theoretically the law protects him in Britain more than it does in the West Indies, where no black man’s oath can be admitted as evidence. However, law is not practiced justly. Captain Pascal feels free to defy the law and challenges Equiano to bring a lawsuit against him, confident that he has the upper hand. When Equaino's friend is kidnapped by a former master, Equiano does find a solicitor who promises to help, but he is simply tricked out of his money....
