Who is the audience for the book? How can we tell?
Equiano seems to address the book primarily to the white Western world. As a slave narrative (though it overlaps with other types of narrative, e.g. travel), the book has a specific purpose: it is meant to show the atrocities of slavery. The book is written in English; Equiano, at the end of the first chapter, makes his first argument against the idea that black people are inherently less worthy, or that their minds are less formed. This is an argument undoubtedly only needed for those who do not already believe it.
