Pent-1-yne ,when reacted with excess $H_{2}$ in the presence of Nickel, forms an alkane, pentane. The triple bond between the carbon atoms breaks, and Hydrogen atoms attach themselves with these carbons. The triple bond is converted into a double bond. In an excess of Hydrogens, this double bond is converted to a single bond and thus, an alkane is formed as shown.
