Answer
Though there is no proofreading activity in protein synthesis that is analogous to the 3' to 5' exonuclease activity in DNA replication, the highly redundant amino acid codon read by ribosomes is efficient in preventing errors in protein synthesis. In particular, several different codons correspond to each amino acid residue, so oftentimes, a point mutation in one base pair will not lead to a change in the amino acid, thereby preventing the creation of an aberrant and nonfunctional protein.
