This muscle is located deep in the abdominal wall. It supports abdominal viscera; helps to maintain posture; aids in speech and breathing, and has roles in defecation, urination, vomiting and childbirth The origin of this muscle includes the inguinal ligament, the iliac crest and thoracolumbar fascia. Insertion is on ribs 10-12, costal cartilages 7-10, and on the pubis. Innervation is supplied by anterior rami of spinal nerves T7-L1. Rectus abdominis muscle This muscle extends from the sternum to the pubis--in the anterior abdominal wall. It acts to flex the waist in bending forward. It functions in doing sit-ups; and it stabilizes the pelvic region during walking. It also helps to compress abdominal viscera. Its origin is on the pubic symphysis and the superior margins of the pubis. Insertion is on the xiphoid process of the sternum and on costal cartilages 5-7.
