To understand different ways in which authors may establish the details of their fictional worlds
One of the first jobs of any novel is to establish the world in which it is set. Sometimes this is our own world, or a familiar past. But in science fiction, writers frequently need to invent new worlds that are either completely separate from our own, or that show a significant development from the world that is familiar. Understanding the world of a science fiction story - especially a dystopian one like Farenheit 451 - is every bit as vital as understanding the characters and story.
