In this instance, Zeitoun knew there was nothing he could do. The punishments being inflicted on the prisoners in the make shift prison were for everyone, those being tortured and those watching were both meant to be affects by the horrors of what went on. These men were being broken emotionally and physically. The punishments were doled out to take the men's humanity away from them..... to make them feel less than human.
