Perhaps the most compelling human element of the conclusion of Great Expectations is the resolution in Pip's character. Having been through everything with Havisham and finally achieving romance with Estella, Pip learns that social status is not a reliable source of meaning for life. In fact, it is often detrimental to any meaning at all.
