August suffers from facial anomalies or disfiguration. His mother has been homeschooling him because of the negative attention he receives from people who stare at his deformed face. His parents wanted to be sure he could emotionally handle everything before putting him in a regular school. His father described it as sending Augie off like a "lamb to the slaughter.'

August had been homeschooled not because of his disfiguration nor negative types of attention. He had been homeschooled as he keeps going through surgeries and does not want him to spread the disease he has to other children who are being currently educated and perfectly healthy. Later, his mother, Isabel, wanted him to start a new fresh life and go to school. Meanwhile, his father, Nate, did not want to send him to school. Right, on time, Auggie's parents wanted to send him to school so they met the principal, talked it out and the principal really wanted to meet him. Thankfully, he got into the school.
